Why we love to fly in the Bay Area
The San Francisco Bay Area is one of the most unique, pleasant, and rewarding places to fly in the United States. More importantly, it’s also a terrific place to undertake the journey toward becoming a certificated pilot. East Bay Flight is based at the Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport (OAK), right in the heart of this dynamic area, and once you take to the skies here, we think you will share our enthusiasm.
So why do we love the Bay Area as a home for flight training?
The views are unbeatable. Returning to OAK in the evening and on approach to runway 28R, the setting sun frames the San Francisco skyline on the horizon. We can take flights directly over world-renowned landmarks, such as the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island. And even on the most mundane of training flights, we are flying over the Bay, over the golden hills of the East Bay, over the wine fields of Napa and Sonoma County, and numerous other beautiful sights.
The immediate airspace is complex… The Bay Area is home not only to OAK, but also to two other major international airports, San Francisco (SFO) and San Jose (SJC), as well as numerous other controlled airports such as Hayward, Livermore, San Carlos, Palo Alto, and Napa. The airspace itself is complex, and also filled with traffic ranging from heavy airliners to corporate business jets and small piston general aviation planes. While challenging, this environment is ideal for teaching students situational awareness, radio communications, and air traffic control (ATC) procedures.
…But we are in close reach to diverse destinations. Within a relatively short flight, we can reach not only other urban areas such as Sacramento or Monterey, but also small, uncontrolled airports speckled through the Central Valley, the Sierra Nevada foothills, and the Coastal Range. This means great options for cross-country training flights to work on key skills such as pilotage and electronic navigation, as well as fun options for certificated pilots stretching their wings.
ATC is accommodating and easy to work with. Students learning at OAK get to immediately begin developing their skills working with ATC – not only the terrific controllers at Oakland itself, but at Northern California TRACON, Oakland Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC), and other facilities. For such a busy area and the traffic volumes that they handle, these controllers are wonderfully accommodating to general aviation and student pilots.
Weather that facilitates safe flying and good training. Unlike other parts of the country, we rarely need to grapple with “bad” weather, such as thunderstorms and convective activity. For much of the year, we enjoy blue skies and moderate winds, resulting in minimal weather cancellations – a real benefit for ensuring good progress in flight training. The main weather phenomenon we experience is the coastal marine layer, a thin stratus cloud layer that typically develops overnight and burns off by mid-morning, particularly in the summer. This pattern allows pilots working on their Instrument Rating to experience actual Instrument Metereological Conditions (IMC – aka, the clouds) in a relatively benign way.
A robust flying community. Fly into nearly any airport in the Bay Area, and you will see and feel the buzz of activity. Long-time pilots and airplane owners swap notes, new generations of student pilots practice their skills, and small kids with their parents watch excitedly in observation areas as Pipers, Cessnas, and other small planes take to the sky. General aviation is alive and well in the Bay Area, and East Bay Flight is proud to be part of this vibrant community.
In short, we at East Bay Flight feel privileged to fly and teach in the Bay Area, and we are sure that people who start their flying journey here will feel similarly. Reach out to schedule a discovery flight and see the Bay from the air!
